BOOK REVIEW:
I love Margaret Peterson Haddix’s books! Have you read any of them? The most recent one that I have read is called The House on the Gulf. It’s about the Lassiter family, which includes a mom, a sixteen year old boy named Bran, and his twelve year old sister named Britt. Britt’s family doesn’t have a lot of money and when they moved from Pennsylvania to Gulfstone, Florida they had to move into a very poor community.
“Back in Pennsylvania, the three of us always took turns sleeping on the couch. But ever since we’d gotten to Florida, Bran had insisted that Mom and I get the bedroom. It had something to do with the footsteps we sometimes heard racing past our door in the middle of the night. Once we’d even heard gunshots.”
So when Bran gets a summer job house sitting for the Marquises, an older couple, the Lassiter family couldn’t have been more excited. Britt’s mom, who is trying to qualify for a single moms scholarship to finish college and become a doctor, can now quit her job and go to school full time. But when they move into the Marquises house Bran won’t let them change the thermostat or use the washer or dryer. He also packed up all of the pictures, dishes, cups, and anything else of the Marquises that could be broken. Bran is also acting really weird and doesn’t want Britt to stand on the front porch too long or socialize with any of the neighbors. He’s always nervous and panicked which is very unlike Bran.
While I read I felt like I was addicted to this book! I really like that the book was written in first person so you could see the main character’s (Britt) thoughts and opinions on things. Anyone that enjoys a book with lots of twists and turns and an unexpected ending should pick up this book and get reading!

Instructions: Figure out the brainteaser according to what grade you are in and send the answer along with your home room and what grade you are in to either Kelly@whatsupwakefield.com or karina@whatsupwakefield.com. We will put all correct answers for each grade into 3 hats and pull 3 names (one 6th, one 7th, and one 8th) we will notify you if you are a winner.
6th Grade: Last year, the 8 kids in a beginner’s horseback-riding group were 7, 9, and 10 years old. The mode of the ages was 10, and the mean was 9. There were equal number of 7-year-olds and 9-year-olds. This year the group has stayed together. How old are the children now, and how many are there of each age?

7th Grade: There are two glasses of the same size and shape, one containing water and the other containing wine. A man takes a spoon and transfers a spoonful of water from the water glass to the wine glass. Then he takes a spoonful of the mixture from the wine glass and puts it into the water glass. Now, did he transfer more water to the wine glass, or more to the water glass?

8th Grade: The principal of Jimbo’s school interviewed 30% of the 8th graders at recess about the food fight yesterday. The Assistant principal grabbed 40% of the 8th graders at lunchtime to investigate the disappearance of all of the blackboard erasers. Fortunately for Jimbo, he was in the 50% of 8th graders that escaped without an interview. If 25 8th graders had to front only the Principal, how many students are in 8th grade at Jimbo’s school?
