Warriors Book Review

October 31, 2008

Over the year I have read a really awesome series called Warriors!! Warriors is written by an amazing writer called Erin Hunter! This series just blew me away with is unique vocabulary and it’s from the point of view of a cat, how cool is that?! In this series, cats have four clans called.. River clan, Wind clan, Thunder clan, and Shadow clan! Each cat has their own duty in the clan such at leader, deputy, medicine cat, and the many warriors. The leader is given nine lives and the name “star” from Star clan. Star clan is a group made up of the clan’s ancestors and gives guidance and even prophecies to the clans! Each clan also has a deputy who will later be leader. Every clan also has a medicine cat, which communicates with star clan and heals sick or injured cats. Medicine cats gather every quarter moon to share dreams with star clan. Clan rivalries do not apply to the medicine cats, and they have peace with other clans, and usually help each other. Mostly each clan is made up of warriors, the cats who fight in battles and patrol the borders, whole following the warriors code. Warriors train apprentices until they are six moons, meaning months, old.

Editor’s Note: Several books from the Warriors series by Erin Hunter are available in the Media Center.

How to Adopt a Rescue Dog

October 31, 2008

So, what exactly do you have to do to adopt a dog? One option is to contact a “rescue group.” In my case, we wanted to adopt a Golden Retriever or Golden Retriever mix. We were familiar with the breed and knew that we could give an orphaned dog a great home. You who have never gone through the process may think it is very simple. From personal experience, I can tell you with no doubt in my mind that it’s not easy at all. You emotions soar and fall throughout the process but rest assured you will be matched with a special “forever friend”. I would like to teach you how to adopt a dog from the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue in North Carolina.

The first step is to sit down with your family and come to an agreement on what you are looking for in a dog. Personality, gender, age, and health of the dog must all be considered. To adopt a dog from the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, you should try to attend one of their monthly adopt-a-thons. You can meet the staff and fill out an application form. The application form will have all of your important information and desired dog profile. The NRGRR take their mission seriously and will check your references. They even called our veterinarian in Canada to see if we were responsible dog owners! When you are approved they assign you a caseworker to keep on the lookout for any new dogs coming into their adoption system. You can also look at the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue’s website to view adoptable dogs. The dogs come into the system as strays, shelter rescues, and sadly due to owner surrender.

The second step is waiting. Your caseworker works on your behalf to match you up with a dog that fits your profile. All dogs brought into the system are examined by a vet. They are neutered, given vaccines and treated for heartworm or other health problems if needed. The dogs are then fostered by caring families while they await adoption. Your caseworker will set up the appointment between you and the foster family to see the dog. On the day of your visit, you will interact with the dog and decide if it’s a good match for you. The foster usually insists on meeting each member of your family and will ultimately decide if you are a good match for the dog. The foster has a tough job because multiple families may be interviewed for the same dog. You may think you and the dog are a good match, but the dog may go to someone else. Try not to lose heart. The next interview may have you taking your new “forever friend” and leash into the back seat of your car.

That’s the basic process of adopting a dog from the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue here in North Carolina. Remember, you need a lot of patience in the process of adopting a dog this way. You may have many let downs, just like I did. Do not be discouraged, for you will find the right dog in time. Our dog, Sunny, is a blessing to our family and I can’t imagine our home without her. If you want to learn how to properly establish a healthy relationship with your dog, I would suggest watching “The Dog Whisperer” with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic channel. I hope you will consider visiting a rescue when your family is ready to adopt a dog. The Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue is a wonderful organization. Their website is www.goldenrescuenc.org.

Wakefield Football 2008…So Far

October 31, 2008

I am here to talk about our very own Wakefield Wolverines football team. Our Wakefield has a mediocre record of four wins and three loses. They improved their win record by one with a pretty impressive win over our very own rival Durant from just down the road. it was a close game by halftime, but in the second half Wakefield turned it on! They scored twenty unanswered points to have a impressive victory. Although they have four wins, their three loses have come down to nail-biters that Wakefield could just not come away with. In all of their three close loses they did not lose by any more than a touchdown. That’s really heartbreaking when you loose games like that, because you play so hard in a whole game to just lose by a couple of points. it’s like studying for a really hard test and failing because you missed one question too many! Sometimes you work so hard to prepare for it but you can’t come up with the passing grade. It’s like that but in a football stand point. It’s really depressing. With one more game to go, Wakefield looks to improve their record to five wins and three loses to have a great finish to their up and down season.

How to draw anime

October 31, 2008

The first step in drawing “anime style” is just that~~style. What kind of character are you drawing, and for what purpose?
For example, a schoolgirl will have a different facial structure and body proportions than, say, a Fighter.

…Not to mention clothing, posture, and the fact that not all school girls or Fighters will look like these examples. these are just basic guidelines to ensure that you don’t end up with a school girl with the body proportions of a fighter character (unless, of course, that is what you want. There are no real rules when it comes to drawing anime)
Style is completely a matter of preference, but it’s a good idea to be aware of some of the main archetypes before going on to facial structure and body proportion.
Here are some examples
-Cute – Round cheekbones, large eyes, facial parts set close together.
-Evil – Drawn more ‘realistically’. Sharp cheekbones, very small pupils.
-Shoujo – Sharp chins, huge expressive eyes, elegant nose bridges, slender body.
-Stupid – Round head and body, very simplistic features, tiny little eyes.
-Fighter – Simplistic features, exaggerated body proportions, small head.
Good luck!!

Leadership

October 24, 2008

The definition of a leader is a guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement, or political group. A leader is someone who leads, who stays in the front. A follower is someone who follows leaders and stays behind everyone else. What does this mean to you? Are you a leader? Think about it. Here are some quotes that leaders have said that I would like to share with you…

“Winning is not a sometimes thing, it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do the right thing once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”
-Vince Lombardi

“Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts FOREVER.”
-Lance Armstrong

“A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.”

-Theodore Roosevelt

THE WONDER DOG

October 24, 2008

**The Wonder Dog**

This beautiful pup will put your dog to shame. Her name is Sophie and let me tell you she is a miracle. She has been through a whole lot. She was born on July 30, 2008 at 2:00 am. She is an American Show Lines German Shepherd Dog. The reason why she is such a miracle is because this pooch was born with a problem on her foot. On her front leg, the two bones are split apart and the inside bone does not join the foot.

Her foot turned at a 90 degree angle. When she is old enough they are taking her leg off so she will not feel as much pain as she would if it was still there. The part that will put your dog to shame is that she thinks she is as perfect as her mom. Her mom is a beautiful show dog named Bell. Her owner, Sarah Bridges (my grandmother), is going to put Sophie through TDI training (THERAPY DOG INTERNATIONAL).

When she gets older she is going to be able to visit schools and have young children read to her. She will also set an example because if a handicap person or a disabled child meets her and hear stories about her then they will see that maybe they could grow up and be a good role model and help others achieve their dreams. Sophie is also going to go to hospitals to see children and veterans so they can have a nice visit and a happy leave. I am so proud of Sophie. In my opinion she is a Wonder Dog because of her bravery and courage.

North Carolina State Fair and the Economy

October 24, 2008

I read the article title “At a fair, weather beats economy” from the News & Observer. This article was about the North Carolina State Fair. The article was on how the economy may affect the attendance at the North Carolina State Fair. People being interviewed in the article said the economy will not affect the North Carolina State Fair attendance, but people may not spend as much money this year. The price of food has gone up for the vendors; therefore prices may be raised. Many people are lined up to get reduced price tickets, so hopefully the rain will hold off. As long as the weather stays nice there should be normal attendance. The goal is one million people attending the North Carolina State Fair. The Fair is having an extra half-day to get more visitors this year. At 3 pm on Thursday, the North Carolina State Fair will begin. Usually the fair lasts for ten days, but this year the fair will end in ten and a half days. Personally, I believe the weather will be a bigger factor than the economy. Visitors may be on a tighter or smaller budget, but the definitely wont miss out on the Fair. I agree with Brantley, a person being interviewed, people will probably forget about the economic status while at the North Carolina State Fair. Everyone is crossing his or her fingers, hoping the Fair won’t be rained out.

Odin – My Favorite Super Hero

October 24, 2008

by Terrell W.

My favorite hero in Marvel Comics is Odin. Odin is a god. He is the father of the superhero named Thor. Odin is really powerful. He has superhuman strength, never gets tired, and never gets sick. He is not perfect, though. Once a year, he has to sleep for 24 hours to keep his powers strong. Odin once beat the Silver Surfer in a fight. Plus, I think he is the only Marvel hero who can really beat the Juggernaut and the Hulk. I played the Ultimate Alliance video game and at the end, Doctor Doom absorbed Odin’s power. Luckily, all the Avengers and the Fantastic Four got his power back. Odin is my favorite hero, and I admire him for being invincible.
